Endorsements: Nelson, Kamilewicz, Moon and Soupos for Glenview District 34 school board
This endorsement is a consensus opinion of the Daily Herald Editorial Board.
Four of five candidates running for the Glenview District 34 school board are committed to helping address issues such as construction, finance and the mental health of students and employees coming off a prolonged pandemic.
Current board President Scott Nelson and first-time candidates Alex Kamilewicz, Julie Moon, Vasilios Soupos and Jennifer Patel are vying for four, 4-year terms on April 4.
Nelson, Kamilewicz, Moon and Soupos are members of the Glenview School District 34 slate, a political association not affiliated with the district. They also were endorsed by the 58-member Glenview District 34 Caucus.
Nelson, 55, of Glenview, is a commodities trader completing his first term on the board. He brings the experience of helping the district navigate the COVID-19 pandemic. He also seeks to continue work the board has started seeking ways to close a structural operating deficit while increasing staffing.
Kamilewicz, 49, of Glenview, is in project management for AbbVie. He has experience in finance, project management, human resources and strategic planning working across multiple industries. He is a member of the Citizens Finance Advisory Committee and is on the board of the Glenview Education Foundation. He also was part of the Yes D34 Referendum Committee and the Citizen's Task Force.
Moon, 52, of Glenview, is chair of the Glenview Education Foundation board. She has worked primarily in marketing and communications. She would like to help set policy when the district's strategic plan is updated in 2024.
Vasilios Soupos, 45, of Glenview, is a director of compliance engineering for Instant Brands with two young children in the district. He has experience serving on industry boards including being chairman of the ASTM F26 Committee on Foodservice Equipment and with employee negotiations.
Patel did not participate in interviews with the Daily Herald or in any forums for our Editorial Board to get a sense of her priorities.
Nelson, Moon, Kamilewicz and Soupos are endorsed.
