History center exhibit celebrates Des Plaines women

This March, the Des Plaines History Center unveils its newest exhibit, "Women in Des Plaines," just in time for Women's History Month.

Women's vital role in the development of this community is often hidden. The further one goes into the past, the less likely it is that the work and achievements of women were acknowledged in the historical record.

The stories of Des Plaines' women pioneers, and those of ordinary women who quietly did extraordinary things, will be featured in this exhibit.

"The stories of so many unknown Des Plaines women came to light while researching this exhibit. These stories include those of pioneer women like Harriet Conant Goodnough, whose candid letters provide a glimpse into the joys and difficulties of life in 1830s Des Plaines," said Curator of Collections Siobhan Heraty.

"They also include the stories of women who were pioneers in their fields, like Dr. Jane Rogers Walton, a widow who ran her Des Plaines family farm while commuting to medical school in Chicago in the 1870s. We're really excited to share the stories of these, and many other women, with our visitors."

"It has been especially fulfilling to go along with Siobhan on her deep dive into women's history. Her research elucidates the local historical narrative by applying the analytical scope of gender to our records. Thanks to this exhibit project, we have some new stories to share and new ways for our visitors to find a connection to and separation from our society's past," said Executive Director Philip Mohr.

"Women in Des Plaines" will be on display through December. The Des Plaines History Center is supported by the city of Des Plaines, the Des Plaines Park District, its members, and other local business and community contributors.

The History Center is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 1-4 p.m. Sundays. Admission is always free, although donations are appreciated.
