Letter: PACs are disservice to community, voters

Flyers recently arrived in mailboxes supporting slates of candidates for both the Barrington District 220 school board and the Barrington Area Library board. The flyers state that they are paid for by a PAC.

Organizations may claim to be nonpartisan; however, how would anyone know when dark money PACs hide who and how much money is funding the PAC. This lack of transparency is a disservice to our community.

The flyers point to the voice of parents and values of the community, and again one might ask, which parents and whose values are being represented and which voices, values and needs are being left out?

When hidden money is coming from people, groups or businesses that choose to hide behind a secret member PAC, one cannot know what the real motives and goals are. These motives then become suspect.

Library board candidates and school board candidates are generally people who know their neighbors, have children in the schools and engage in thoughtful and inclusive ways in school and library events. They care about the whole community - all children, professional teachers, highly trained school librarians, administration staff, counselors, parents, guardians, and support staff. Everyone belongs and all voices are important.

Groups, businesses or people who are using PACs to hide who they are and how much money they are donating are concealing real motives. People who care about our whole community and the reputation of our community need to be aware that dark money is put into PACs in order to hide real motives and hidden goals.
