No injuries, three pets rescued during house fire in Elgin

No one was injured and three pets were rescued during a fire Wednesday that left an Elgin home uninhabitable.

The Elgin Fire Department responded just after noon to a report of black smoke coming from a house in the 800 block of Walnut Avenue.

Firefighters arrived to smoke coming out of the second-floor windows of the single-family home.

They extinguished the blaze in about 10 minutes.

The kitchen and stairwell suffered fire damage. There also was extensive smoke damage on both floors of the home. The initial damage estimate is $80,000.

Firefighters removed one dog and two cats during a search of the home.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
