Letter: Discussion needed

I am disappointed that you are no longer publishing the Scott Adams comic strip Dilbert. I have enjoyed this strip from the very first days it was published, highlighting Adams's parody of the business culture of constant change that drove many large American companies into bankruptcy, including the one that gave me an offer I couldn't refuse after nearly 38 years of employment.

You state that the reason for cancelling the comic strip is due to a rant by Adams on YouTube in which "he called Black Americans a "hate group'" and that "white people should "get the hell away from" them."

Certainly Mr. Adams has the right to express his opinion as granted by the First amendment to the Constitution. Your cancellation of his comic strip is most certainly not in keeping with the Voltairean principle: I disagree with what you say - but I will defend to the death your right to say it.

You are taking Adams' words out of context. He did not call all Black Americans a hate group, but rather those who would act so, such as Black Lives Matter, which you have frequently reported on in your newspaper. Are all blacks hateful? Certainly not. Does that mean that some Black Americans cannot be racist?

You have published many stories about those who push woke theories about intersectionality, white supremacy and the bigotry of "whiteness."

It would be easy to express my disagreement by cancelling my subscription to the Herald in protest. However, this would be a mistake because it would keep me from listening to those whose ideas disagree with mine. As the late Mortimer Adler wrote in "Six Great Ideas," matters of truth demand discussion until those who disagree reach some level of common ground.

I wish the Herald editors would do the same.
