Letter: Incumbent's stand on policy change

At the July 19, 2021, Glenbard District 87 School Board Meeting several policy changes were made including the discontinuance of the following policy. "Students caught cheating on a test or quiz will receive an automatic zero."

This policy on the consequences of cheating and several other longstanding policies were replaced by the following policy. "A student engaging in academic dishonesty on an assignment/assessment will be required to redo/retake the assignment/assessment or a similar assignment/assessment."

I attended the standing-room-only meeting. More than two dozen racially diverse speakers represented a range of heartfelt parents, retired educators, former students and concerned residents. They offered referenced studies and personal stories to illustrate their opposition to the proposed policy changes. None of the speakers were in favor of the new policies. Still, all the policy changes were approved.

Margaret A. DeLaRosa advocated for and voted in support of the policy changes.

It might be useful to be aware of that before you vote.
