Letter: Bad behavior is bad behavior, period
A common scenario. The Daily Herald publishes a letter describing behavior or a statement by a public figure that is disrespectful, false, etc. Then, the Herald publishes a letter excusing/normalizing that behavior or statement by pointing to a similar transgression by someone that the letter writer does not agree with.
Bad behavior, lies, disrespect, etc, should be denounced -period. Pointing out these kinds of tit-for-tats does not let one person of the hook for bad behavior simply because someone else also acted poorly.
There is a nugget of wisdom in the Carolyn Hax column from January 6th in which she wrote, "In 25 years' worth of dysfunction mail, the single most reliable predictor of relationship misery is a partner who, in some combination, won't look inward, admit fault….. (But will cling fiercely to their partner/favorite scapegoat.)." It would be refreshing if all letter writers were honest about the bad behavior of all people instead of attempting to deflect or excuse behavior of those we agree with.
