Aurora Lutherans to join 5,000 volunteers packing 1 million meals in Naperville anti-hunger effort

An estimated 5,000 volunteers will converge on North Central College in Naperville on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 18-19, to pack 1 million dry meals to defeat hunger worldwide.

Feed the Need, an effort at North Central's recreation center, is a community mobile pack by Feed My Starving Children, a nonprofit which has locations in Aurora, Schaumburg and Libertyville.

From 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Aurora plans to assemble a team of 40 congregants to help pack manna meals, balanced meals of vitamin powder, dehydrated vegetables, soy and rice.

The Rev. Patrick Fish, St. Mark's pastor, said his church is among 24 interfaith groups and 10 businesses and civic groups participating.

Gerald Auto Group of Naperville is a "super sponsor," donating 83,000 meals to the effort.

Five 90-minute packing sessions with 1,000 volunteers each are planned. Organizers also hope to raise $240,000 in donations.

A $5 donation to Feed My Starving Children can feed 21 children in need.
