Letter: Access issues for the disabled

Whenever one visits a medical site, I have noticed American Disability Act (ADA) classified persons. Since I have become handicapped, I am very concerned and feel that some of the following items need to be resolved as soon as possible:

• All buildings where physicians practice medicine need automatic doors or a warning system that informs staff to open the door, making a more efficient entrance for ADAs.

• The practice needs to have a bariatric-type wheelchair available for a patient's use that has properly working brakes and is hygienically clean.

• The physician's site needs to have at least one ADA restroom on the floor that has an automatic door opener. Grab bars need to be on both sides of the throne and the height must be greater than 20.5 inches.

• Inclines in the premise need to be as steep as needed for a wheelchair or a person easily to traverse them.

I am asking that you observe any items at a medical site where you feel needed improvement is required. I then would like you to please send your concerns to the site's patient advocate or CEO. You surely would like to see decent conditions for ADA persons. Your cooperation may assist all ADA persons to have a better life and be able to experience life as you do.
