Letter: Fix chain of command of sensitive documents

The recent revelation of inappropriate handling of classified documents by Joe Biden during his tenure as vice president is a huge disappointment. It reflects carelessness about national security and, despite the fact that Biden and his lawyers are cooperating with government officials in identifying and returning the documents, the president does not appear to be playing straight with the American people about the matter.

We've come to expect that kind of behavior from the previous White House occupant, but I had hoped Biden was above such deviancy.

Even more importantly, the fact that two top-level elected officials - first Trump and now Biden - have been found to have mishandled such items, a serious question arises as to how the government manages the chain of possession of them.

Who knows how many other classified materials are being recklessly handled by other government personnel? The Daily Herald rightly raised this point in an editorial on Jan. 15.

How is it even possible that anyone at any level is able to put our national security at risk in this way? Steps should be taken at once to ensure that no one else, no matter how highly placed, is able to potentially expose secret documents to our enemies.
