Letter: A call to restore dignity of leadership
A favorite quote of mine is from Rabbi Hillel. "If I am not for myself who will be for me? If I am only for myself, what am I? And, if not now, when?" As I watched the House of Representative clap hands for the newly elected Speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy, I saw members with mixed reactions from ecstasy to dismay. After 15 voting attempts, at midnight on a Friday night, the United States had a House Speaker.
I thought: Why was there not one Republican ready to express his desire to lead and discuss his aspirations for America? What is the fear? Where are you? Where has the dignity of leadership gone?
Where are the voices of reason to keep the hearts and minds of its citizens hopeful? When McCarthy gave his brief speech, I heard talk of more investigations and hearings. As a senior citizen, I learned there are plans to cut Social Security and Medicare. I am not the only worrying senior.
In a time of rapid inflation and declining 401(k)s, I long for Congress to commit to solving problems of costly health care, insurance, inflation, housing and education. We were once a country of innovation, where political parties tackled major issues, debated openly and held meaningful hearings. We also deserve the truth.
It is time to demand a return to factually-based news from both parties on all networks.
Are we still a government for the people, by the people or has that been redefined? Because if I am only for myself, who am I? If not now, when?
