Des Plaines Coffee Talk looks at life of Julia Child

The Des Plaines History Center, 781 Pearson St., Des Plaines, will host a Coffee Talk at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, titled "Julia Child: A Living History Portrayal."

In the 1960s, thousands tuned in every week to watch Julia Child demonstrate the art of French cooking on television. Actress and scholar Leslie Goddard brings the iconic French chef to life in this portrayal, where Child discusses everything from her relationship with her husband, Paul Child, to the mishaps of cooking on television.

"My grandmother adored Julia Child, and I grew up watching the French chef. But I've learned so much from researching her life. She had an unbelievable work ethic - she tested recipes over and over and rewrote every recipe until it was absolutely clear and precise. She taught me to respect real ingredients, like fresh eggs and good butter. More than anything, she was always herself, with her exuberance, her distinctive voice and her passion for good food," says Goddard.

The History Center's Coffee Talks are a series of adult programs meant to invite public participation and discussion on a broad range of historical topics.

This program is free thanks to generous sponsorship from Village Bank & Trust; donations are appreciated.

The next Coffee Talk will be "Joy and Fear: The Beatles, Chicago and the 1960s" at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, March 9.
