Letter: Steering political donations to the worthy
There is a slick TV ad asking Illinoisans to further subsidize the state of Florida - volunteerflorida.org. Before supporting this "charity," I offer the following facts for consideration:
1) Florida is the No. 3 "taker state," that is, receives significantly more in federal funding than it contributes to the federal treasury;
2) Florida is one of the five top recipients of federal FEMA funds;
3) Florida has no state income tax; 4) Florida Gov. DeSantis, while taking some action to try to mitigate effects of climate change, will not commit to taking actions to try to prevent climate change;
5) DeSantis has used migrants as political weapons threatening to send them to Illinois.
Thus, Florida is already receiving more than its fair share of your tax dollars. prefers that those of us who pay state income tax subsidize Floridians who don't and just re-elected a governor who is not taking enough action to be a leader to address climate change, an existential threat to his state and who threatens to use migrants as pawns by sending them to Illinois. I will be donating my funds to more worthy causes.
