Letter: What's at stake with Route 53 property

Well, Route 53 is in the news again. You would think we have spent enough time, money and energy on this issue.

Unfortunately that is not the case.

A state task force has recommended that the land be transferred to greenway and handed over to Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Many believe that this is a great idea, including 16 of the 19 people on the task force. Unfortunately the elected officials in Mundelein think this is not a good idea. They would prefer to keep the land so they can build in the future.

They say they can use the land for farming and recreation. It is time to scrap this whole idea and move on.

The mayor says it would not be good governance and could doom Lake County. Really, doom? I wonder if he knows what doom even means: death, destruction, or a terrible fate. I don't think we will be doomed. Doom will come into play if the governor, IDOT, IDNR, decide not to convert to greenway. All of the wildlife and wetlands that would be destroyed would most definitely be doomed.

A side note: They just finished the Jane Byrne interchange 4 years to late we know that for sure and $300 million over budget and that is what they are reporting. I am sure it is more than that. It would probably take 20 years to finish and who knows at what cost. So please, governor, look at what the people want not what a few elected officials who really don't have a clue what is at stake here.
