Aurora gives hundreds of thousands in grants to small business owners

Christmas came early this week to the joy and relief of dozens of small business owners in Aurora.

While he didn't arrive with reindeer through a chimney, Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin did cause quite the clatter when he surprised small business owners as he arrived with noise makers, cheers, a large "Aurora is Open for Business" sign, and special gifts.

The gifts were monetary checks the city is providing to more than 70 small businesses in Aurora through two grant programs totaling nearly $750,000.

"It's been a rough few years for all of us, and especially for our small businesses," Mayor Irvin said. "I hope these funds can provide some relief, especially as we head into the holiday season."

Through the Re-Start Retention Grant Program, COVID-19 relief funds were spread across the city's 10 wards, representing 56 small businesses that received grants of up to $10,000 to remedy, in part, the loss of revenue as a result of the pandemic.

The balance of the businesses received financial assistance of up to $100,000 through the TIF-funded Finish Line Grant Program, which assists companies with completing rehabilitation projects that will enhance the economic viability of downtown Aurora.

While business owners knew they would receive the grants, which the Aurora City Council publicly approved, many were still left speechless - and some were even brought to tears - when the mayor arrived before Christmas with checks in hand.

"This will definitely help to pay the bills," said Clara Diaz, owner of Balderas Beauty Salon in downtown Aurora.
