Letter: On due diligence
Regarding Janet Lumm's letter expressing frustration that politics seem to be prioritized over country, I couldn't agree more with this sentiment. But unfortunately, I can't agree with some of her other claims.
An investigation of Hunter Biden was started under President Trump by Trump-appointed U.S. Attorney David Weiss. Although it is customary for incoming presidents to name their own U.S. attorneys, when President Biden took office, he left Weiss in place to avoid any allegations of interference. An internet search shows recent articles claiming there might be a basis for several criminal charges against Hunter.
When Donald Trump recently announced his run for president, Attorney General Merick Garland did not open a new investigation, but rather announced that two existing investigations would be moved out of the Department of Justice to an independent special prosecutor to avoid any appearances of political pressure or intrigue.
Don't believe me? Good. As the letter writer notes, it is important to do your due diligence. Any claim by a letter writer, Facebook friend, website, MSNBC, Fox News or even the Daily Herald should be vetted and examined for bias. I agree with the letter writer that only if we search for the truth, point out the falsehoods and identify as Americans rather than Republicans or Democrats can we move forward together to solve the problems we face.
