Letter: With Trump in race, be vigilant against hate

Letter writer Tom Sweeney was deeply offended that the Daily Herald printed a column by Jamie Stiehm in which she wrote of her "nightmare about evil Elon Musk taking over twitter," called him a "creature from another planet" and called his using Twitter to urge his followers to vote Republican "antidemocratic." He's upset when the Democrats call themselves the inclusive party, and then spread this kind of hate speech.

I, for one, agree with her. Musk has already fired his content monitors, so the platform is now flooded with racist tweets. He's let Donald Trump back on the platform, just in time for him to spread his vile lies and spread hate. The Republicans demonized immigrants, calling them criminals.

Then we have the attack at a Walmart in El Paso. They demonized the LGBTQ+ community, calling them "groomers." Now we have the slaughter at Club Q, in Colorado Springs. The idea that calling Musk a "creature from another planet" and "antidemocratic" The idea that the Democrats are responsible for the divisions in our country is ridiculous in face of the facts.

Mr. Sweeney's letter reveals a typical Republican technique. Faced with facts they don't like, they project their faults onto their enemies. This justifies their hate for others. With Trump already running for president, we must be vigilant and call out the lies when we see them.
