Letter: Thanks for all who helped serve recruits
Thanksgiving Day has passed, but I did not want to let the holiday go by without listing how thankful I am.
On Thanksgiving, Wheeling AMVETS Post 66 had the honor of hosting 39 recruits from Great Lakes Naval Training Center in their final weeks of Basic Training for a sit-down Thanksgiving dinner and more.
This was their first opportunity after several grueling months of isolation and regimentation to be themselves in a very relaxed setting. The specific reason I am thankful is multifaceted. First, I am thankful that there are these young men and women who are willing to give of themselves for the good of the nation.
Secondly, I am so very thankful for my fellow AMVETS, our paid staff who volunteered their time and talents, along with our patrons, friends, neighbors and relatives who also volunteered their time and talents, to prepare two great meals and share of themselves, making each and every young man and woman feel welcome, comfortable and at home.
Finally, I want to thank all those who provided both goods and services to make this day a success. Specifically, thank you, to the Village of Wheeling and their outstanding Police Department, the Masonic Lodge of Wheeling, the St. Joseph the Worker Knights of Columbus and the many outstanding businesses in Wheeling and Buffalo Grove that supported this event.
Thank you one and all.
