Eighth grader's artwork to grace Des Plaines District 62 winter cards

A drawing by an eighth grader at Iroquois Community School will be featured on Des Plaines School District 62's winter card.

Student Dana Um's drawing was chosen as part of a contest. It depicts two birds perched on berry-covered branches against a blue background.

Second place went to Emma Stefanache, a third grader at Plainfield Elementary School. Third went to Ashir Arsalan, a seventh grader at Chippewa Middle School.

More than 30 pieces were submitted for the contest. They were judged by a panel of community volunteers and folks from the Frisbie Senior Center in Des Plaines.

"We extend our sincere appreciation to our partners at the Frisbie Senior Center for hosting our judging this year," said Jennifer Tempest Bova, the district's community relations director.

"We had over 30 members of the Frisbie Senior Center, along with representatives from the Des Plaines Police Department, Des Plaines History Center and area school districts, help judge this year's contest."

All the entries will be displayed at the Des Plaines Public Library through December.

About 1,000 cards featuring Um's winning design will be mailed next month to community members and business partners, Bova said.
