Oak Grove students honor veterans with special ceremony Nov. 11

Oak Grove Elementary District 68 in Green Oaks honored more than 50 veterans and service members with their families during an annual Veterans Day ceremony Nov. 11. Veterans were asked to stand and were recognized based on the branch of service they represented.

The event was attended by more than 125 people and also streamed live, so veterans, service members and families who could not attend were able to participate and be involved. The Oak Grove band and chorus performed, as well as students in first through third grade.

The Veterans Day event was followed by a reception for the veterans, service members and their families and concluded with a walk through an artifact museum hosted by the eighth grade students.

The artifact museum, which was newly created in the past two years, was an opportunity for students to share their knowledge and understanding of artifacts from the various branches of service with both the attendees of the ceremony and other students at Oak Grove.

The new display, "Honoring our Veterans," was donated by the Treutelaar Family and showcased the six branches of service. Oak Grove families honored veterans and current service members with pictures and dedications as well.
