Letter: No comparison between papers, social media
Growing up in the '40s and '50s, everyone subscribed to a newspaper, sometimes two on Sunday. It is so sad to see how few people today subscribe to a home-delivered newspaper. At our house, we receive three daily newspapers: The Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times, and, of course The Daily Herald. The reason we do this is that we want to get a complete view of the news, and I think we do. I really love the Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and of course, Sunday editions since they are so big and packed with so much information.
I loved the letter from Nancy Daly of Wheaton who cites the reasons why she loves reading the paper. I agree. We wouldn't dream of eating breakfast without our papers spread out on the kitchen table. I sometimes take most of the day to complete my reading, and I read all the sections with the possible exception of the Sports and Classified sections.
As it happened, right next to the writer's letter was a column by a frequent contributor, Keith Peterson, who did a bit of fact checking which is always welcome.
There is really no comparison between reading newspapers and reading social media which can be so toxic. I wish more people would realize that. In newspapers there are articles by well-known authors who have to stand behind their words. That is certainly not the case with social media, where it is the Wild West and where anything goes.
And I also agree that the letters to the editor are always interesting to read whether you agree with them or not. Keep up the good work.
