Registration for Aurora's senior shoveling program opens Nov. 8

Winter is on the horizon, and the City of Aurora will, for the third year, assist senior citizens and residents with disabilities with snow removal for the season.

Operation Senior Shovel is a free program that pairs Aurora senior citizens and residents with disabilities with volunteers who will provide shoveling services.

The program is open to 150 Aurora residents at least 60 years of age or residents with disabilities or severe medical conditions that prohibit them from shoveling snow.

In addition, qualifying households cannot have other adults under the age of 60 years old and physically capable of removing snow.

Senior citizens, persons with disabilities, or designees can request assistance by applying online at www.aurora-il.org/SeniorShovel or by calling (630) 256-3015.

The online application and phone line will be available beginning at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 8.

Operation Senior Shovel is a volunteer-based community initiative. All volunteers are asked to commit to serving the duration of the winter season and will be assigned to specific houses for the season. All volunteers must provide their own snow removal equipment.

The city will provide salt at each approved home.

Volunteers can register online at www.aurora-il.org/seniorshovel at any time.
