An interview with Andrew Schmidt, marketing manager of Showalter Roofing Service, Inc.
Q: Describe your company.
A: Showalter Roofing Service, Inc. is family-owned and operated, fully licensed roofing company, specializing in commercial roof installations, maintenance, warranties and more, since 1979. Our trusted team of roofing experts has the skill and experience to service every customer's needs, all under one roof.
Q: Do you plan to hire any additional staff or make any significant capital investments in your company in the next year?
A: We are always looking for team members who are hardworking, humble and hungry.
Q: What will your company's main challenges be in the next year?
A: As with many industries, we have had to address supply chain issues and feel confident we are well-positioned for the years ahead.
Q: What's the hottest trend in your industry?
A: Silicone roof coatings for commercial flat roofs have exploded in popularity; they offer a cost-effective way to extend the life of a roof as well as aid in energy efficiency.
Q: Does climate change affect how your company does business?
A: Absolutely, from the concerns over the availability of petroleum-based roofing products such as asphalt and rubber, to the effects of out-of-date roofing practices contributing to heat islands, long-term sustainability is a major issue facing the industry.
Q: What does your company do to reduce the effects of climate change?
A: Many of our customers, from large commercial buildings to family homes are looking to invest in a variety of climate-friendly and cost saving products and systems, such as green roofs, cool roofs, solar panels and alternative and recycled materials.
Q: What does your company do regarding DE&I (diversity, equity & inclusion)?
A: Everyone is welcomed and respected at Showalter roofing. Our team rallies around three core values and one focus:
1. We value people and relationships;
2. We are hope-filled, yet face the facts head on;
3. We do what's best for the entire team.
Our focus: To create a positive experience in the lives of our team members, customers, suppliers and community.
Q: Does your company donate time or money to any philanthropic causes? If so, what causes?
A: We are very active in the community. We even garnered national recognition for charity work by receiving the National Roofing Contractors Association's 2019 “Community Involvement Award.” We have fostered partnerships with the Roofing Alliance, Ronald McDonald House Charities, and also operate their own 501(c) 3 not-for-profit called, “A Roof Over Your Head.” We are also proud to have held the status of being Illinois' largest pro bono donor to Habitat for Humanity.
Q: Does your company do anything else to make your community better?
A: We are always on the lookout for opportunities to be a force for good, whether it means supporting an employees' kid's scout troop, volunteering at Feed My Starving Children, or sponsoring and cheering on a local charity run.
Q: What do you do to make your business a good place to work for your employees?
A: We have always held the view that if our people thrive, so will our business. That is why we consistently fight to offer benefits that most companies our size usually do not offer.
Q: What is one interesting fact about your company that most people may not know?
A: In February of this year, we launched a companywide rebrand. We have replaced our nearly 40-year-old logo and are in the process of wrapping our fleet of trucks and vans with new colors and our friendly new mascot: ”P.D.” — a nod to company founder “Papa” Dale Showalter's nickname initials.
