How do the Blackhawks replace Seth Jones? It's going to take a committee

Seth Jones is out for three-to-four weeks with a right thumb injury, and it's an issue the Blackhawks are handling by committee.

"All these young guys that are doing well," coach Luke Richardson said after Sunday's shootout loss to the Minnesota Wild, "we just need to make sure that they are not satisfied. They're enjoying it, but they keep working on their game and getting better. It helps them and it helps the team."

A collective "they." Richardson means top to bottom, young to old. He needs them to fill in for him.

And as Richardson mentioned, it does start with the young guys.

You don't want to celebrate the injury, but if you had to find a positive in the situation, 23-year-old Filip Roos is probably the largest beneficiary from Jones' injury, which was sustained in the second period of their game against the Sabres. After not playing for a week, Roos found himself back in the lineup Sunday night against the Wild and will likely remain for the duration of Jones' injury.

In his first game back, he recorded his first NHL point.

"Roos hasn't played in a while," Richardson said, "but I thought he looked good. He skated the puck tonight, he moved the puck and drove the net with Toews on that one goal, and made the play to start it, so it was great to see a guy come back in and just play his game."

Roos was paired up with Caleb Jones for the night but saw about three minutes less ice time than Jones.

Seth Jones leads the team with 25:12 ice time per game. In the game against Minnesota, everyone seemed to get a taste of that time.

In the overtime loss, Jack Johnson led the team with 24:20, followed by his pairing partner Jake McCabe at 23:33. Connor Murphy spent 21:26 on the ice, and Caleb Jones saw 20:42, which should be higher now that he is taking over Seth's spot at the point on the first power play unit - the Hawks did not draw a penalty against the Wild.

"Caleb's been playing really well this year, and tonight he was exceptional, even last night, too," " Richardson said. "He's not the thickest, biggest guy, he's not the same size as his brother, but he really knows how to use his angles and get in front of the guy right on their hands and stop them. "Moves the puck quick, unfortunately, we didn't get to see him on the power play tonight, but he can shoot the puck as well."

Overall, with all the time spent on the ice, Caleb Jones led the team with 5 blocks, McCabe led defensemen with 4 hits, and Johnson paced the team in ice time on that first line.

With Roos and Jarred Tinordi both recording points Sunday night, every defenseman has at least one point.

"I think we have a lot of good players in here," Tinordi said after the game. "Everyone's stepping up in their own way ... I think guys are stepping up in his absence, and I think it showed today."
