Letter: Supreme Court choice

It's time to vote for Illinois Supreme Court justices and although these races aren't getting much attention, 2nd District voters have a very important choice to make. I'm writing because Judge Elizabeth Rochford is the right choice for the 2nd Supreme Court District. Judge Rochford has a wealth of legal and judicial experience that has earned her the ratings of highly recommended by the Illinois State Bar Association and highly qualified by the Lake County Bar Association, both of which evaluate candidates for judicial office.

As a Lake County attorney, I have seen Judge Rochford in action, and I view her as a conscientious public servant and an exemplary human being. She is bright, personable, competent, ethical, courteous and caring. She is a judge who cares about the people who appear in her courtroom.

Throughout her decade on the bench, Judge Rochford has initiated positive change in our courthouse, especially to the benefit of people who cannot afford legal counsel. She started a help desk to support people without an attorney seeking guardianship of minors and disabled people and a program in the domestic relations court to provide assistance to self-represented litigants.

Judge Rochford's opponent, while he has name recognition from having served as Lake County Sheriff, has no judicial experience and is not recommended by any bar association in the state.

This race is especially important because Illinois Supreme Court Justices are elected for a 10-year term and only run for retention thereafter. We need to elect someone whom we trust as a conscientious public servant, especially at a time when more difficult decisions are to be made at the state or local level. Judge Elizabeth Rochford is that person.
