Seven Michigan State University students, one alumnus nominated for prestigious graduate school scholarships

Michigan State University has nominated seven undergraduate students and one alumnus for nationally competitive graduate school scholarships: the Churchill, Marshall, Mitchell, and Rhodes scholarships.

The scholarships support students attending graduate school in the United Kingdom or Ireland. The results of these competitions will be determined in the coming months.

The MSU nominees for the Churchill Scholarship:

Rohan Challa, an MSU alumnus with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering in the College of Engineering (Northville High School in Northville, Michigan).

Samuel Sottile, an Honors College senior majoring in Advanced Mathematics in the College of Natural Science (Allen Academy in Bryan, Texas).

Challa and Sottile have also been nominated for the Marshall Scholarship along with:

Zahra Ahmad, an Honors College senior majoring in Comparative Cultures and Politics in James Madison College (Troy High School in Troy, Michigan).

Elyse Baden, an Honors College senior majoring in Political Theory and Constitutional Democracy, and Social Relations and Policy in James Madison College; and Interdisciplinary Humanities in the College of Arts and Letters (Adlai E. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, Illinois).

Abigail Barnum, a senior majoring in Comparative Cultures and Politics, and Social Relations and Policy in James Madison College; and Arabic in the College of Arts and Letters (St. Clair High School in St. Clair, Michigan).

Carly Sandstrom, an Honors College senior majoring in Comparative Cultures and Politics, and Social Relations and Policy in James Madison College (Marquette Senior High School in Marquette, Michigan).

Jack Metty, an Honors College senior majoring in Economics in the College of Social Science (Eisenhower High School in Shelby Township, Michigan).

Baden, Barnum, and Sandstrom are nominees for the Mitchell Scholarship along with:

Macken Keefe, an Honors College senior majoring in Political Science and the joint Master of Public Policy degree in the College of Social Science (Rim of the World High School in Lake Arrowhead, California).

The nominees for the U.S. Rhodes Scholarship include Ahmad, Baden, and Barnum.

MSU has produced 16 Churchill Scholars, 19 Marshall Scholars, five Mitchell Scholars and 20 Rhodes Scholars.

Established in 1959, the Churchill Scholarship offers 18 American students of exceptional ability and outstanding achievement the opportunity to pursue graduate degrees in engineering, mathematics, or the sciences at Churchill College at the University of Cambridge in England.

The Marshall Scholarship provides support to approximately 50 of the most outstanding undergraduates in the country to study at any university in the United Kingdom.

The US-Ireland Alliance established the George J. Mitchell Scholarship Program, which allows up to 12 future American leaders to pursue a year of graduate study in Ireland and Northern Ireland.

The Rhodes Scholarship is the oldest and perhaps most prestigious international scholarship program, enabling outstanding young people from around the world to study at the University of Oxford. The U.S. Rhodes Scholarship awards 32 scholarships, and the Global Rhodes Scholarship awards two scholarships.

The National and International Fellowships and Scholarships (NIFS) Office, administered by the Honors College, helps interested undergraduate and graduate students pursue major national and international opportunities by providing information and direct support throughout the competitive application processes.
