Inmate who died in cell at Lake County jail identified

Officials have not determined a final cause of death of the 51-year-old man who was found dead in a cell at the Lake County jail Friday evening, but they say it appears it was not from foul play.

Patrick McCann had underlying medical conditions that contributed to his death and had not suffered any recent significant injuries, according to an autopsy performed Monday by the Lake County coroner's office.

Coroner's Chief Deputy Steve Newton said the final results are pending toxicology tests.

Lake County sheriff's Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said that before McCann was brought to jail early Friday morning he had been receiving treatment at a hospital because of his high level of intoxication.

Covelli said McCann was arrested by officers after he was released from the hospital just after midnight Friday.

There was a warrant for McCann's arrest stemming from violating an order of protection, sheriff's officials said.

According to court documents, McCann went before a judge for a bond hearing later on Friday.

A correctional officer conducting rounds at 8:34 p.m. Friday reported McCann, who did not have a cellmate, unresponsive in his cell.

Officers used a defibrillator and did CPR until Waukegan paramedics arrived and took over. McCann was pronounced dead after paramedics gave care for "an extended period of time," according to officials.

The Lake County Major Crimes Task Force is investigating McCann's death.
