One suspect in custody after attempted catalytic theft

A 29-year-old Chicago man has been charged with trying to steal a catalytic converter in Arlington Heights, but several other robbers eluded police Saturday morning, according to a news release.

Arlington Heights police responded to a 911 call reporting the theft at a condominium complex in the 1400 block of East Central Road around 4:30 a.m. Police interrupted the catalytic converter theft in progress and several suspects fled in a vehicle, which was shortly disabled after it drove over a large landscape boulder. Several people fled from the car but officers apprehended Terrell L. Davidson, of the 5800 block of West Division, police said in the release.

Arlington Heights police established a perimeter with Elk Grove, Mount Prospect and Rolling Meadows police departments and deployed a thermal imaging drone to search for the people who fled, but they didn't find anyone.

The vehicle, a blue 2018 Jaguar F-Pace, was recently stolen from downtown Chicago, police said. Inside were nine stolen catalytic converters and three loaded Glock handguns, each with an extended magazine and one with a laser sight. A lift and power tools used to steal catalytic converters were also found in the car.

Davidson is charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle and theft over $500, both felonies, and misdemeanor obstructing a peace officer. His bond hearing is set for Sunday in Chicago.
