Wheeling movie theater gets $50,000 village grant for new signs

The company that recently reopened a movie theater in Wheeling's Town Center complex will get a $50,000 municipal grant to pay for new exterior signs.

The village board approved the grant for the Cinergy Entertainment Group venue at 401 W. Dundee Road this week.

Formerly a CMX CinéBistro facility, Dallas-based Cinergy took over the site this summer.

The village grant will come from Wheeling's Retail and Restaurant Build-Out Assistance Program. Through that effort, business owners or property owners are reimbursed for up to half a project's cost.

The signs are expected to cost Cinergy more than $125,825, documents indicate.

Cinergy has nine theaters. Others are in Texas, Oklahoma and North Carolina.

The CMX theater had been open only about a month when it was forced to shut down in March 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Miami-based movie theater chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection a short time later.
