Letter: GOP is not done on abortion

"It's hard for me to wrap my head around the thought process of lawmakers that would rather a full-term baby suffocate to death than allow a mother to make a decision that spares her child that pain."

The quote is from Kailee DeSpain, a married Texas woman. She was told her pregnancy would both endanger her life and produce a baby with so many defects it would die soon after birth. She and her husband had to leave Texas to obtain a legal abortion. They borrowed money to pay for it because Texas law prevents insurance from covering it.

For 50 years, Republicans plotted to overturn Roe v. Wade putting their thirst for power over the lives and well-being of the people they serve.

Republicans aren't sorry and they aren't done. There have been state bans with no exceptions, threats of prosecution for murder and proposals for a national ban on abortion. Some have even signaled a desire to ban contraception and marriage equality.

Look at the people in your life. Would you want them to suffer as Kailee and Cade DeSpain have? Do you want a bounty on your loved ones" heads, or for them to bleed to death during a back-alley abortion? Right now, Illinois is considered an abortion island but that will change if Republicans win in November.

Protect those you care about by voting for Democrats this election. Vote for candidates like Sean Casten for Congress (IL-06), who has a proven track record of supporting reproductive care and Mary Kay O'Brien, whose election to the Illinois Supreme Court is necessary to assure abortion care remains enshrined in Illinois.
