Standoff between Highland Park man, police ends peacefully
A police standoff in Highland Park involving a man threatening to harm himself ended peacefully Friday evening, city officials said.
The man agreed to leave his residence around 11:30 p.m., after 10 hours of negotiations with police, according to a city of Highland Park news release. Highland Park officials said police had reason to believe there were firearms on the property.
The standoff, on the 1300 block of St. Johns Avenue, forced police to close St. Johns Avenue between Lincoln Avenue and Wade Street until the situation was resolved.
"There is no threat to public safety as a result of this incident," a Highland Park spokesperson said. "The City greatly appreciates the patience of residents within the closure, which contributed to the safe resolution of this incident."
The man was evaluated by paramedics after leaving his home and no one was harmed.
