Letter: Prosecutor is right about Safe-T-Act

The state's attorney of DuPage County, Bob Berlin, recently wrote a guest editorial in the Daily Herald opposing the new Safe-T-Act set to take effect on January 1st.

As a criminal defense attorney for many years and a person who is most familiar with the inner workings of our justice system, I couldn't agree more with Mr. Berlin's critical assessment.

Without strict judicial screening, gratuitously freeing an accused person charged with serious offenses will only endanger our community. Although well-intentioned lawmakers may have sought to eliminate moneyed interests from bail considerations, the law far exceeds that purpose. There are some alleged offenders who should not be rewarded with the light of day.

Bob Berlin's discussion of the New Jersey law is right on point. Safety of our fellow citizens should be the top priority.
