Prospect Heights Library introduces new program for homebound residents

The Prospect Heights Public Library now offers Homebound Services to library card holders who are unable to visit the library.

Homebound is defined as generally confined to the residence, either temporarily or permanently, due to age, illness, disability or other mobility problems.

"There is a long tradition of Homebound Delivery programs in the United States. There was a time when librarians used to deliver to underserved communities on horseback, and I'm excited to be a part of that tradition. It's important to be accessible to residents who, for one reason or another, may not make it into the library," said Amanda Herrmann, who created the program.

When looking for a new staff member to create a Homebound Delivery Program, the library was excited to find Herrmann, a recent library school graduate. With seven years of experience and a new library degree, she hopes to build a robust outreach program while providing a holistic approach to library services.

"We are aware that being able to physically visit the library can be difficult for some patrons, and we are determined to serve them. If anyone is interested in this service, they can apply online or pick up a form at the library," she said.

Referrals for this service can be made as well. If you or a friend or family member are interested in Homebound Delivery, you may contact Herrmann at (847) 259-3500, ext. 239, or at aherrmann@phpl.info.
