Letter: Lifeline to students could benefit us all

Isn't the Biden executive order to cancel student debt unfair to those students who, with great effort, paid off their loans? Yes, it is.

But couldn't you argue that it is unfair to rescue swimmers who are in danger of drowning in a rip current, when some swimmers made it to shore?

Lots of those with student debt are drowning in debt. Helping them to reduce or eliminate that debt offers them a lifeline. Maybe they can buy a car to get to a better job, or even save to purchase a home. That can be a benefit for all of us.

In 2017 President Trump signed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which benefitted large corporations and wealthy Americans. It was blatantly unfair to poor and middle class Americans. But it promised to benefit all Americans because it would increase investment and productivity.

That didn't happen and it increased the federal deficit. But the argument was: yes, unfair, but it will benefit all of us.
