Letter: Government's role

We are going through a difficult historical period as to what government should prioritize. The two obvious choices are, one, that government is there to serve the economy (tax cuts, "unleashing entrepreneurs," energy policy, promote peace through power, etc); or, two, that government is to serve the people (tax the wealthy, help the poor, promote peace through agreement etc.) Does anyone have data that negates either choice?

Just asking ...
