Dog killed in Villa Park house fire, family displaced
A family dog died during a fire that left a Villa Park home uninhabitable over the weekend, authorities said.
Firefighters were called at 2:35 p.m. Sunday to the home in the 0-100 block of South Summit Avenue. The first crews found heavy smoke coming from the roof and fire in the kitchen to the rear of the house.
No one was home at the time, with the exception of the pet dog, according to a village spokesman.
Firefighters found the dog in a rear bedroom and brought the pet outside. The dog succumbed to smoke inhalation and could not be revived, the spokesman said.
The fire started in the kitchen in the stovetop area and was extinguished within roughly 15 minutes, the spokesman said. The blaze caused an estimated $60,000 in damage.
The family displaced by the fire will be staying with relatives.
