Wheeling, Mundelein and Wauconda were among the winners in Cook and Lake County on the opening weekend of the 2022 high school football season.
Here's a look at some of the week one highlights.
Wheeling 58, Round Lake 7:
The teams got a jump on the regular season, playing Thursday night. Wheeling then catapulted themselves past the Panthers. Simon Micula, who played just the first half, set a school record with five touchdowns. AJ Marchetti ran for a touchdown and threw for another. Round Lake's Isaac Jackson had the lone touchdown for the Panthers.
Mundelein 22, Grant 8:
Brody Paluch had a pair of touchdowns on runs of four and seven yards. The sophomore also had a conversion run to lead the Mustangs. RJ McNelly had a 10-yard touchdown pass to Carson Cooper and a conversion pass to James Krusinski.
Wauconda 49, Aurora Central Catholic 0:
Wauconda won its 12th consecutive regular season game and 17th in their last 18 regular season games by blasting the Chargers.
Grayslake Central 47 Hubbard 0:
The Rams built a 40-0 lead at the half and cruised past the Greyhounds. Kaiden Miller had touchdown runs of 30 and 55 yards, Garrett Gunther caught a 39-yard touchdown pass from Cole Gillette and a 23-yard touchdown reception from Dom Pavell. Alex Carter had a 26-yard touchdown run, Jeremiah Poyser a 33-yard touchdown run and Pavell has a 14-yard touchdown run.
Lemont 32, Libertyville 27:
The Wildcats fell short in their travel to Lemont.
Sterling 40, Lakes 7:
Lakes trip to Sterling wasn't very shinny. The Eagles fell behind 34-0 at the half and were never able to recover. Max Bausch averted the shutout with an 11-yard touchdown run with just over a minute to play.
Conant 26, Lake Park 13:
The Cougars used a trio of first half touchdowns to win the border war with Lake Park.
Elk Grove 42, Maine West 7:
Elk Grove scored the first 42 points to win their neighborhood rivalry with Maine West.
Hersey 31, New Trier 0:
Hersey pulled away from a 3-0 halftime lead to roll past the Trevians and give new Huskie coachTom Nelson his first win. Carson Grove had a huge day for the Huskies. The junior had a 54-yard touchdown run, a 28-yard touchdown reception from Carter Hansen and a 72-yard punt return. Colton Gumino added a five-yard touchdown run.
St. Viator 35, De La Salle 7:
St. Viator picked up a huge non conference win, scoring 35 consecutive points to blow past CCL/ESCC White division conference rivals Meteors. It was the Charlie Dolson show for the Lions. The junior quarterback threw for 202 yards and five touchdowns. Michale Nix caught a pair of touchdowns covering 45 and 67 yards. Patrick Bauer had a 10-yard touchdown catch, Jake VanBooven a 10-yarder and sophomore Dayvion Ellis caught a 30-yard touchdown.
York 49, Schaumburg 6:
York scored all of its points in the first half and cruised past the Saxons. Daniel Uczarczyk scored the Saxons lone touchdown on a 28-yard pass from Joey Macaluso.
Prospect 56, Sandburg 20:
Prospect picked up where they left off from last season . The Knights score 50 first half points to roll past the Eagles. Brad Vierneisel had a huge day for the Knights. He was 15-of-21 for a school- record 452 yards and six touchdowns. He also rushed for another score. Frank Covey, who was back at wide receiver, also came up huge with 7 receptions for 222 yards and three touchdowns. Jake Parisi had 6 receptions for 170 yards and two touchdowns while Noah Easter had two catches for 85 yards and touchdown.
Addison Trail 48, Maine East 6:
Addison Trail cruised past Maine East, handing the Demons their 42nd consecutive loss.
