Deadline extended to apply for District 63 board seat

The deadline for applying to fill a vacancy on the East Maine School District 63 board has been extended.

Originally set for Friday, the deadline now is Aug. 26. The date was modified to encourage more applications, District 63 spokeswoman Janet Spector Bishop said.

"The board certainly would like to have the widest possible pool of applicants to choose from," she said.

The seat opened when Krystal Zec resigned from the Des Plaines-based board Aug. 4.

To qualify, an applicant must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18, a registered voter and a District 63 resident for at least the past year.

Interviews will be held Aug. 29 and Sept. 5.

To apply, fill out the application available at emsd63.org/Page/8519. It should be sent to board secretary Deborah Piazza at dpiazza@emsd63.org by 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26.

The eventual appointee will serve until spring 2023 and then can run in the local consolidated election.

District 63 serves more than 3,400 students from parts of Des Plaines, Niles, Glenview, Park Ridge, and Morton Grove. It has five elementary schools, a middle school and a preschool.
