Fire causes $30,000 damage to Elgin apartment Wednesday

Elgin fire officials believe cooking materials sparked a blaze inside an apartment unit Wednesday night that caused an estimated $30,000 in damage.

No injuries were reported in the blaze that began at about 9 p.m. in a first-floor unit of a two-story apartment complex on the 1400 block of Todd Farm Drive.

The fire was brought under control about 10 minutes after firefighters arrived, but both the unit's kitchen and living room sustained significant fire damage, officials said.

Occupants of the apartment were alerted to the fire by activated smoke detectors, fire officials said.

Only the unit where the fire started was deemed uninhabitable. Residents of other units were able to return to their apartments.
