Glencoe's Aitz Hayim to Integrate the Highland Park July 4 Shooting into a Jewish Remembrance Discussion

As part of its Tisha B'Av remembrance, Glencoe's Aitz Hayim Center for Jewish Living will link the mourning of the destruction of the First Temple to the communal mourning over lives lost and shattered on July 4.

"Tisha B'Av is the day of mourning/transformation on the day the world as we knew it was destroyed. It is a day of reflection and redefinition of finding new ways to achieve our goals. That we remember the temple is an essential way of our living past. Tisha B'Av teaches us that mourning is not just sadness, but also incorporating what was into what we need," according to Dr. Marc Slutsky, spiritual leader for Aitz Hayim.

Leading the discussion will be Rabbi Tamar Manasseh, who previously spoke at Aitz Hayim, and who organized MASK (Mothers/Men Against Senseless Killing) from the corner of 75th and Stewart in Englewood. She will address the violence in Highland Park from her vantage point as a Jewish presence in a crime-ridden community. She comes with the compassion and rage that are in every part of her neighborhood at every time.

The discussion will be held on Saturday evening, August 6th, at 7:30 PM (CDT) at Central Cafe, 455 Central Ave., Highland Park. The café is located near the site of the shootings.

On Sunday morning, August 7th at 10:30 am (via zoom), Professor Stephen T. Asma, will explore the multiple factors that go into the creation, sustaining, and enabling of dangerous behavior. What are the interactions between families and society, psychopathology and the availability of weapons, communal protection, and individual freedom?
