Police: 5-year-old girl fatally shot inside Muncie home

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) - A 5-year-old eastern Indiana girl was fatally shot Tuesday, police said.

The girl was shot around 2:25 p.m. at a home on Muncie's south side, police said.

When authorities arrived at the scene, 'œthey discovered a firearm had been discharged inside the residence, striking a 5-year-old female,'ť aDeputy Police Chief Melissa Criswell said in a news release.

The child was taken by ambulance to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, The Star Press reported.

'œAt this point this is an ongoing investigation,'ť Criswell said. 'œThere is no continued threat to the community.'ť
