Proposed Wheeling bakery gets $100,000 village grant
A retail bakery that's set to open soon in Wheeling will receive a $100,000 municipal grant to help pay for an interior renovation.
The village board on Monday approved the grant for West Town Bakery, which will occupy part of the former Twin Peaks space at 781 N. Milwaukee Ave. The free-standing building is outside the Westin Chicago North Shore hotel, just south of Lake-Cook Road.
Proposed improvements are expected to cost nearly $800,000, documents indicate. They will include:
• New heating, cooling and ventilation equipment
• Upgraded electrical and lighting systems.
• New fixtures.
• New kitchen equipment.
The funding will come from Wheeling's Retail and Restaurant Build-Out Assistance Program. Through that effort, business owners or property owners are reimbursed for up to half a project's cost.
The bakery will occupy about half the roughly 11,800-square-foot building.
A cannabis dispensary to be called OKAY Cannabis Experience is planned for the rest of the building. Both are owned by the same company, the Fifty/50 Group, but they will operate separately.
Four West Town Bakeries operate in Chicago. This will be the first suburban location.
