Letter: Explain the difference between protest, insurrection

Can you please explain why those who forced themselves into the presidential palace in Sri Lanka, forcing out the president, taking it over and compelling the military to surround the city - are referred to as "protesters" rather than "insurrectionists" or "seditionists" or "rebels" by the media? What's the difference?
