Early morning house fire in Elgin causes $250,000 in damage

No injuries were reported in an early morning house fire in Elgin today that officials believe was sparked by electrical issues in the basement.

Firefighters were called to the one-story, single-family home on the 600 block of Cooper Street just after 1 a.m. for reports of smoke in the home.

Residents were able to escape the house unharmed before firefighters arrived. Firefighters rescued two pets from the home and returned them to the residents.

Firefighters encountered smoke on the first floor and fire in the basement.

The fire was extinguished within 30 minutes, but the house sustained an estimated $250,000 in damage.

Fire officials said working smoke detectors alerted the residents to the fire.

The house was deemed uninhabitable.
