Letter: Show more of how much waste we create
Thank you for putting the photo of the mountain of "recycling or trash" on the front page. I wish it could have been a video showing the frontloader scooping it up 24 hours a day, with trucks bringing more in through the other door. It might make a person think about what they throw away without thinking.
We absolutely must reduce our waste.
There are several ideas to accomplish this: charge money for throwaway items; replace plastic with something that breaks down more quickly and safely; force companies that produce the waste to be responsible for its disposal.
But in addition to these ideas, I think showing people the consequences of their actions might change some behavior. Most people want to do the right thing, but often they don't know what the right thing is.
Our waste companies, civic leaders, stores, restaurants, environment organizations, news organizations and individuals can help with that.
As an individual, I'm asking that you please consider reducing the number of things you buy that are only used once for a few minutes and then thrown away and start reducing that mountain of trash.
