Cubs' Suzuki may be ready to begin rehab assignment
After being sidelined for more than a month with a left index finger sprain, Cubs outfielder Seiya Suzuki could begin a rehab assignment as soon as Wednesday, manager David Ross said.
Suzuki took live batting practice at Wrigley Field before Tuesday's game against Cincinnati. He spent last week rehabbing in Arizona while the Cubs took a two-city road trip.
Suzuki and second baseman Nick Madrigal (left groin strain) hit against two of the Cubs injured starting pitchers. Marcus Stroman (right shoulder inflammation) threw 36 pitches and Drew Smyly (right oblique strain) 32, roughly two innings of work for both players.
Outfielder Jason Heyward is being monitored for a sore knee. First baseman Frank Schwindel (back) was reevaluated by doctors Tuesday and pitcher Wade Miley played catch.
"Everything seemed to look really good," Ross said. "Seiya looked really good, no issues. Madrigal looked really good. JayHey's still banged up a little bit, the knee is barking on him.
"Seiya's probably at a point where if he feels good tomorrow, we'll start to think about a rehab assignment for him. I think Nick's probably a little bit away from that, and Smyly and Stro, we'll have to see how they come back tomorrow."
