No injuries after fire in Des Plaines exercise, nutrition business

No one was injured when fire broke out just after noon Monday at a small business on East Oakton Street in Des Plaines, authorities said.

Smoke was filling Smart Body, 1671 E. Oakton St., when Des Plaines firefighters arrived at 12:18 p.m., Deputy Chief Matt Matvl said.

Fire crews had to smash the glass storefront and cut holes in the roof to fight the fire, said Slobodan Popovic, who runs Partus Sign Company two doors down at 1667 E. Oakton St.

Matvl said firefighters were able to attack the blaze inside the building and contain it to just the interior of Smart Body. The fire was extinguished in about 20 minutes, he said.

Investigators have not determined what caused the fire or made an estimate about how much damage was caused, Matvl said.

The business, which hosts exercise classes and sells nutrition products, remains closed for now. Graciela Victorino, who runs Smart Body, said she does not know when it would be able to reopen.
