Let your feet fly during Rock 'n' Run the Runway
According to the Chicago Area Runners Association calendar, there are more than 100 runs scheduled in the Chicago area this summer. But only one 5K run is issuing a no fly-zone for the day to allow runners and aviation enthusiasts to get up close and personal with a busy airport.
Channeling their inner "Top Gun Maverick," Rock 'n' Run the Runway runners, walkers and kids in strollers will have the opportunity to explore the runways of the Chicago Executive Airport, 1070 N. Milwaukee, Wheeling, at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 25. All runners and walkers are welcome.
With the aviation control tower close by, and many small planes parked along the runway, there will be great visuals of athletes and families running past the control tower, planes and runway markings.
The Rock 'n' Run the Runway will feature a 5K and one-mile walk, professional time keeping, awards for best male and female finishers, participation medals and plenty of opportunities to view the small planes along the runway.
Gates open at 5 p.m. for live music, fireworks and plenty of food. Live music includes Gone Country from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and cover band Mike and Joe from 8:15 to 10:30 p.m., with a break at 9:15 p.m. for fireworks.
CEA is the fourth busiest airport in Illinois and plays a crucial role as a reliever for the region. Primary users of the airport include flight schools, corporate travelers, and general aviation.
