Bail denied for two Chicago men accused of robbing Lombard 7-Eleven

Bail has been denied for two Chicago men accused of robbing a Lombard 7-Eleven at gunpoint Saturday, authorities said Tuesday.

Reginald Allen, 53, of the 7300 block of North Damen Avenue, was denied bail at a hearing Monday morning, officials said. Allen has been charged with felony counts of armed robbery, being an armed habitual criminal and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.

Officials also shared that Allen's co-defendant, Lennell Owens, 46, of the 8700 block of South Emerald Avenue, was denied bail at a Tuesday morning hearing. Owens has been charged with one count of armed robbery, one count of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and one count of aggravated fleeing and eluding.

In a joint statement, DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin and Lombard Police Chief Roy Newton said Allen and Owens entered the 7-Eleven at 801 S. Westmore-Myers Road around 6:45 p.m. Saturday. Owens then displayed a handgun and demanded money from an employee at the cash register, they said. In addition, Owens stole cartons of cigarettes from shelves at the back of the store and a phone owned by another employee, the statement said.

Authorities said Allen collected money at the front register before he and Owens fled south in Jeep Wrangler. Lombard police located the vehicle exiting a Roosevelt Road parking lot and pursued it.

Owens was at the wheel, traveling more than 80 miles per hour in a 35-mph zone as he tried to escape, authorities said. The Jeep was spotted near I-290 and Route 83 with assistance from the Illinois State Police and a helicopter from the Chicago Police Department. The Jeep then exited I-290 onto 17th Avenue and ultimately crashed into a tree on 74th Avenue in Elmwood Park.

Owens was released from the hospital Monday afternoon.

Authorities found a loaded Glock 10 mm handgun, 33 cartons of cigarettes and nearly $200 in cash in the Jeep, authorities said.

Allen's arraignment is scheduled for June 29, while Owens' next court appearance is scheduled for June 30.

If convicted on all counts, Allen faces 21 to 45 years in the prison, while Owens faces a penalty of 21 to 75 years.
