Elgin man charged with aggravated DUI in fatal 2021 Lombard crash

DuPage County authorities announced Thursday that an Elgin man is charged with causing a crash that killed a teen last August.

Bail was set Thursday morning at $750,000 for Raymond Griffin, 24, of the 600 block of Margaret Place, according to a news release from the DuPage County state's attorney's office.

Griffin was charged April 22 with felony aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol - causing death and misdemeanor speeding more than 35 mph over the limit.

Authorities say that around 12:20 a.m. Aug. 15, 2021, police were called to the Sonesta ES Suites hotel at 2001 S. Highland Ave. regarding a party that hotel security workers had broken up. Police officers saw a red BMW driving on Highland Avenue at 73 mph in a 35 mph zone. The car went through the T-intersection of Highland and Roosevelt Road, rolled over, and caught on fire.

A passenger, 17-year-old Byron Montgomery, was killed.

Griffin's blood alcohol content was higher than .08, the legal standard for intoxication, according to the release.
